What Is Out-of-Network (OON) Insurance? How It Works for Online Therapy
If you’re looking for online therapy that takes insurance, you might have come across the term “out-of-network” (OON) and felt a little confused. What does it mean, and how does it affect your coverage and costs?
Let’s break it down so you can make informed decisions about your mental health care—especially if you want therapy that fits your unique needs and is covered by insurance.
What Does Out-of-Network (OON) Mean?
Most insurance plans have a network—a list of providers and therapists they contract with directly. Seeing an in-network therapist usually means lower out-of-pocket costs for you. I’m currently in network with Aetna, Carleon Behavioral Health, Cigna, Independence Blue Cross, and Quest Behavioral Health. I’m partnered with Headway for insurance billing.
But what if the perfect therapist for your needs doesn’t take your insurance directly? Or what if you want to work with a somatic therapist, like me, who might be out-of-network?
That’s where out-of-network (OON) therapy comes in.
How Does OON Work With Insurance?
When you see an out-of-network therapist, your insurance may still cover part of the cost—but usually less than for in-network providers. You might pay upfront and then submit claims to your insurance for reimbursement.
Some insurance plans offer better OON benefits than others. It’s worth calling your insurer to ask about:
Your out-of-network deductible
Reimbursement rates
Whether online therapy sessions are covered OON
For example, let's say your OON benefits cover 80% of my $165 fee, that means you'd only pay $33 per session.
Why Choose Online Therapy That Takes Insurance—In or Out of Network?
Convenience & Privacy: Online therapy lets you connect from anywhere in Pennsylvania, without travel.
Specialized Care: Many therapists offering somatic or trauma-informed care are out-of-network because insurance reimbursement rates don’t always support this depth of work.
Flexibility: Even if I’m out-of-network, I can provide you with the paperwork you need to submit for partial reimbursement.
